ABSTRACT

Rehabilitation of edentulous patients has been a constant concern in dentistry. Several studies have reported a reduction in the masticatory function in these patients. Osseointegrated implants have been used in order to obtain better masticatory efficiency, but more studies are needed to confirm these results. Aim: To evaluate the masticatory function of patients with conventional dentures and implant-supported dentures. Methods: A double-blinded controlled clinical study was conducted. The sample was composed of 60 patients divided into three groups: G1 with 20 patients with conventional upper (maxillary) and lower (mandibular) complete dentures, G2 with 20 patients with mandibular overdentures and upper (maxillary) complete dentures, and G3 with 20 patients with lower fixed implant-supported complete dentures (protocol). Objective data were collected through the masticatory efficiency test performed by the colorimetric method with the beads, in which capsules of a synthetic material enclosing fuchsine-containing granules were used. Results: A statistically significant difference was found for masticatory efficiency between groups G1 and G2 (pd"0.05) and between G1 and G3 (pd"0.05), and there was no statistically significant difference between G2 and G3 (pe"0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest that placement of osseointegrated implants in complete denture wearers improves their masticatory efficiency.

ABSTRACT

The lack of bone structure direct influences prosthethic results, when there is a need for the use of osseointegrated implants. The bone graft for the reconstruction of atrophic total maxillae before the implants has become, in many cases. Was analyzed 12 patients with total maxillae atrophy who where undergone to bone graft surgery from the iliac crest. Was found an improvement of the external profile, as well as, in the patients in the patients lip positioning after bone graft. In all cases there was an increase of bone in alveolar crest. Also in conclusion, it is possible the use iliac bone graft to reconstructed atrophic total maxillae in order to perform osseointegrated implants.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This systematic review evaluated the influence of surface treatments on adhesion of ceramics, specifically in the system reinforced with zirconium oxide. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from electronic databases (Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, LILACS, SciELO, BBO, CAPES Bank of thesis and Dedalus). Before obtaining the full articles, titles and abstracts were consecutively evaluated and selected according to criteria of inclusion and exclusion by two independent researchers. A consensus was attained later upon mutual agreement. Only laboratory tests on ceramics reinforced with zirconium oxide were considered. Result: The search strategy resultedin a total of 1101 articles. After applying the exclusion criteria, 184 titles and 32 abstracts remained. From the abstracts obtained, only three were laboratory trials. Conclusion: We found that silica can play an essential role to improve the adhesion with this type of ceramic. Clearfill cement seems to be a promising material to replace silica in the future as an adhesion reinforcement method.
